I was pretty excited about this when I heard about it last month. Having a baseline score for all the courses will make tournament scoring faster for the PDGA. And I'm sure it will lead to a more accurate player rating for those that don't or can't play in PDGA events.

I'm thinking it might work just fine with our usual handicap system.

Have two $ pots? One with the handicap and one without?
"We are requesting that all events be standard singles play until we get the system established."
"Once we get everything working smoothly we hope to provide the option for other formats including handicapped, global ratings based, team and even doubles leagues."

Here is a question from the Discussion forum on the PDGA website.

So if the PDGA is not dictating payout structures, I don't see any reason why a league couldn't payout based on a handicapped based system and report raw scores to the PDGA.

That's correct. However, I'm not convinced that raw scores thrown in handicapped play are as high of "quality" for ratings purposes as those thrown in a scratch score format. There's more incentive to increase your scores even higher when you're having a bad round to boost your handicap. Controls to prevent score padding in handicap leagues are typically not implemented or done well other than the DGU approach.

In reference to the above, I think offering round ratings in a handicapped league would deter sandbagging. Although, I've never noticed sandbagging to be a real issue in our league.
I can't think of any reason anyone locally would want to manipulate their rating down.

Another thing too, if it was done at west, you'd have to keep the same layout for the entire league duration. Couldn't switch it around. That could mess with the ratings.

But you could alter the layout from the beginning to make it a better course. Like play from 4's tee pad to 5's basket for example, and or bring in more baskets. Or have the ditch and all the sidewalks OB. Just do the same course layout for 12 weeks. Or maybe have an Rec. and Int. at Westlake and an Adv. and Pro at Riverbend.

Yeah, good ideas.
I'm thinking of a 20 hole layout at Westlake with 2 extra baskets, no changes. Everything will stay in the park, nothing on the streets or ditch road. It would sure be nice to put some kind of funky hazzard or manditory in the lower section.

I always play OB Sidewalks and when I play the back side course, I always play the newly made ditch as OB (in and beyond OB). This really comes into play on back hole #9 (the one you throw down the hill on towards the stop sign) and #10 (the one you throw over the dirt mounds).
I have a really cool hole I play after hole 5 as a stop gap between the sides of the street.
I see your point on the handicap, the league would stop the ones playing for PDGA points from sandbagging for sure. It would be nice though to see a cap on how high your handicap can go, like -10 cap, so it's a a little more fair to the pros that play. Still have to shoot a great score but not -18 down to cash.

Actually, because of the way that the handicaps are figured ((raw-45)*.9) you actually have a better chance of cashing the lower your handicap is. I had to change from 80% to 90% so that the high handicappers had a better chance.
Using the ditch is a great idea.Is it demarkated well enough to use as an ob line? I would like to see a clowns mouth over the ditch that could be played in both directions.

I just use the bottom of the v in the ditch as the line, you know if you are OB.

Thursday league at Westlake park is going strong. Over twenty people again this week and the ace pool was hit for a sweet cashout of $46 by Micha Varneau (must have been a lull in the wind).
The couse played pretty tough today with only 3 peope under par (out of 21). Just ask Josh.
The #1 tag should be in play again next week since I probably wont get out again until then (tennis this weekend) so come and try your luck if you dare.
Tim.

Thursday night handicapped league and tags is on! Come out this Thursday (April 4) to Westlake park around 5:00-5:15 and we'll have 20 fun holes set up. We'll run at Westlake for a number of weeks then move to other courses. I hope to see everyone there.
Tim.
